HP Z400 Workstation

Unlike its higher-end siblings, the Z400 is only available with a single CPU, and it doesn’t feature the snazzy new case. It does share the Nehalem-based performance, however, and on certain applications, the Z400 produced impressive results compared to both previous Xeon generations and the dual-processor Z800. riefly, Nehalem is a hp z400 cpu upgrade technology from Intel that bolsters data throughput to and from system memory and improves core-processing performance. It achieves the latter primarily by adding back hyper-threaded technology (HTT), which appeared on many CPUs prior to the Core 2 Duo line.

The hp z400 max ram provided for my testing came configured with a 3.2GHz Intel Xeon W3570 processor, 6GB of memory, 64-bit Windows XP, and an Nvidia Quadro FX4800 with 1.5GB of memory. Price this out on the HP website, and you’ll come close to $5,900. This is a bit deceptive, though, because the Quadro FX4800, which contributed nothing to Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4) rendering times.

Go with the stock 512MB card and omit the second system drive, which HP supplied so I could test with either 64-bit Vista or XP—about what I paid for my first Intel 80386-based computer back in the last century.

Nvidia Quadro FX 3800

This computer comes equipped with almost everything a video editor could need. There are two hard drives, one for running windows and a second for rendering videos to. It also comes with a Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 so you can also do some 3D modeling. This computer supports almost every media type: Blu-ray, DVD, USB, eSATA, xD, MicroSD, SD, miniSD, MMC, CompactFlash I/II, MSPro and MSPro Duo. Out of the box the hp z400 workstation drivers just needs to have your editing program of choice installed and you are ready to edit.

Every component of the computer is top quality from the Intel motherboard to the 475-watt Delta power supply. The last thing anybody wants is a computer part to fail since downtime can be costly. On top of high quality components the Z400 comes with a 3 years parts and labor warranty. If you are looking for reliability and good service HP delivers.

The first check was the hard drive performance speed using Blackmagic’s Disk Speed Test. For video editors, the hard drive can be a big bottleneck for rendering video files. The primary window’s hard drive managed to get 106 MB/s read and 76 MB/s write speeds while the secondary data drive got 92 MB/s read and 82 MB/s write speeds. This is average performance for a hard drive but there are much faster options available. If you are purchasing one of these computers you may want to buy an external eSATA raid like the LACIE 4Big Quadra for rendering video.

In past benchmarks, using 3DMark Vantage, workstations were achieving high hp z400 cpu upgrade scores due to the Nvidia Quadro assisting the CPU. This “bug” has recently been fixed resulting in lower scores. As seen in the 3DMark Vantage benchmarks, the Z400 is a high performing computer. The XW6600 benchmarked very close to the Z400 but it had 2 processors compared to one. Essentially the powerhouse of yesterday is equal to the midrange computer of today.

Rendering video can be a very time-consuming process. By measuring Adobe Media Encoder’s render time an overall idea of the computer’s performance can be seen. In CS4 a test AVI and MPEG files were exported resulting in 5.7s for the AVI and 28s for the MPEG. In CS5 the same export yielded 10.8s for the AVI and 12.9s for the MPEG. In Adobe Media Encoder the Z400 was able to greatly outperform the XW6600. The only computer we’ve seen that has been able to outperform this is a 12-core powerhouse. This mid-range computer is great for the Adobe Creative Suite.
